Insider tips: Order the Duck for a truly spectacular experience. The restaurant welcomes you to visit their extensive wine cellars. Arrive early for a tipple at the bar. Should wish to have the tasting arrive ravenously hungry – it is gargantuan and very rich.

Verdict: It was my pleasure to sample the unashamedly uncool a la carte menu at Via Veneto. Our petits fours were a saltbomb of anchovy and olive, salmon with ink, cocoa and foie (my favourite) and textbook perfect pommes soufflées. I loved the squid starter – a silky ravioli of onion with ink and tartare.

The red prawn macaroni “A la thermidor” was a true delight. Nothing wasted – the heads are crushed into the sauce which is generously spooned over fat macaroni. The crêpe suzette would have made Keith Floyd proud – aggressively boozy, and fabulously rich. We finished with petits fours (next time I’ll do cheese). An extensive wine list offers you anything you’d want at all price points. This place is a lovingly preserved slice of yesteryear – best suited to a leisurely dinner with loved ones.

Think salmon pink tablecloths and tuxedo clad waiters who expertly handle a duck press, “fillet” an orange, or flambée it’s segments tableside. A top experience from a delightfully vintage restaurant.
