What you need to know: Ignore the menu and instead peruse the fresh flash of fish caught daily. During the evening live music (singer and guitarist) is played. Even if you think you’re above ordering fries, order the fries.

Verdict:  Whilst strolling through the Olympic Port, a very loud, very American stranger named “JT” approached us and enthusiastically recommended La Taberna Gallega – a no frills seafood restaurant overlooking the boats. He promised free Champagne and an amazing dinner: an offer I couldn’t resist.

The free glass of Champagne did not materialise, but a large cava sangria and the dinner did. The sweetest oysters on ice, pan con tomate on chewy bread, langoustine grilled simply with wedges of lemon, lobster in skillet of sizzling confit garlic butter – almost pil pil style – with hand cut chips: a sign of a proud kitchen. The pan con tomate, cake and shots at the end were on the house, I found La Taberna Gallega to be a generous restaurant doing it’s best to shake of the stigma of the lesser loved Olympic Port area. What this restaurant lacks in fuss it more than makes up for in flavour – it is hard to fault this meal as the seafood was spectacularly fresh and cooked by someone with a skilled and sensitive hand. Sit outside and you will get periodically bothered by people trying to sell you things, but it’s an otherwise lovely place to be, with a live singer inside rumbling through traditional Spanish songs.

I strongly recommend asking to see todays catch of fish – pick from any number of shellfish and crustaceans and enjoy grilled, fried, salt baked etc. A lovely little spot if you’re in the area and looking for a relaxed spot for quality seafood.
